Abstract

This is a contribution to a collection of short essays about the work of the late Daniel Kahneman. My topic is Kahneman’s views about the implications for normative economics of the ‘anomalies’ found in behavioural studies of decision making – in particular, whether he implicitly assumed that individuals have context-independent ‘true’ preferences. I refer to a little-known comment by Kahneman on a paper by Charles Plott about ‘discovered preferences’, and report an email correspondence on the topic between Kahneman and me.
