This chapter provides a critical analysis of international investment law (IIL) and sustainable development goal (SDG) 7 (energy). Specifically, it analyses investment disputes relating to renewable energy and concludes that investment law has a role to play in increasing the energy mix. While attainment of the SDGs requires the adoption of aggressive laws and policies, policymakers should also not discard the benefits of international investment agreements (IIAs). The analysis further identifies that the transition to a green economy is not happening fast enough, and is not directed enough towards the developing world. Moreover, while IIL has the potential to play a role in renewable energy related investment, policy coherence is also required for development, as a variety of laws beyond IIAs are required to meet SDG 7. In this regard, IIA reform alongside other investment related polices can be targeted to address policy objectives at the core of SDG 7.
