Abstract

What is Activist Art? Activist art raises awareness, connects communities and advocates for change. This interview examines the multiple ways in which art can respond to, engage new audiences in, and communicate knowledge about issues affecting society. Theatre- and film-maker Gaël le Cornec and Professor of Geography Cathy McIlwaine show how partnerships between academics, NGOs, theatre festivals and artists can connect practitioners and lead to the creation of new work. This work is underpinned by research and can address issues such as gender-based violence in new ways in order to transform how audiences understand and react to these issues.
