Abstract

This creative-critical research project examines hybrid life writing by literary translators and includes my own literary translator memoir Fair. I make an early intervention in the burgeoning field of Literary Translator Studies by proposing that instead of considering translators and their writing only objects of study in translation research, we consider literary translator memoir as autotheory and autoethnography. Through three comparative studies, I explore the ways that women literary translators examine and express their practice, making themselves hypervisible in the process. I pair Sophie Collins and Tiffany Tsao to explore affect, intimacy and shame in their Translator’s Notes. Placing Maureen Freely’s pamphlet essay Angry in Piraeus and Mireille Gansel’s Translation as Transhumance in conversation with one another, I explore the ways Freely and Gansel present their respective translation philosophies via the leitmotifs of hospitality, kinship and complaint. Finally, I bring together Kate Briggs’s This Little Art and Doireann Ní Ghríofa’s A Ghost in the Throat to redefine the amateur translator.
