A synthetic analogue of a trisaccharide fragment of the Trypanosoma brucei Variant Surface Glycoprotein (VSG) GlycosylPhosphatidylInositiol (GPI) anchor, Gal-α-l,3(Man-α-1,6)-Man-α-O-octyl (1), serves as a substrate for two T. brucei α-galactosyltransferases. The principle tetrasaccharide product derived from (1) contains a Gal-α-1,2-Gal linkage.
