I was asked to meet a young woman called Stephanie in my capacity as community mental health nurse by the general practice administrator. This was as a follow-up to a consultation Stephanie had with her GP the week before. During the GP consultation, Stephanie had presented as being highly agitated and exhibited repetitive picking behaviours around her nail beds that had caused them to bleed during the appointment. Stephanie had been given a prescription for anxiety and some sleeping tablets, but the GP wanted to explore if anything more could be done to help with the behavioural issue of skin picking.
