Abstract
This thesis examines four bodies of my work made over the last twenty-three years in addition to a further series which anticipates and points towards new trajectories in the development of my practice. Over this time my research and photography have primarily concentrated on the landscape, and in particular, the topography of East Anglia. Within this geographical area there is a rich tradition of landscape painting and writing. My work has been informed by both, and these traditions and connections form an important facet of my imagery, research and writing. Each chapter of the thesis reflects and examines an individual body of work in the chronological order of its making. While placing the work into a broader context they also establish a reflective framework for examining contemporary cultural and philosophical discourses around each body of photographs. While discussing each series specifically the commentary also demonstrates an awareness of the connection between each body of work and new developments inherent in them. As a body of research and reflective analysis the text articulates a deeper understanding of each series and brings new insights into work made over a span of two decades.
