This essay explores Francis Bacon’s engagement with portraiture, an artistic genre of rich and ancient tradition. Francis Bacon (1909-1992) painted a range of subjects memorialising those closest to him, from small head studies to large-scale triptychs. Collectively, these works question traditional definitions of the genre and blur the boundaries of realism, expressionism, figuration and abstraction.
