We present a novel, anaerobic microfluidic system, for real-time monitoring of strictly anaerobic bacteria with single-cell resolution. Chemotactic responses of a cellulolytic bacterium Clostridium Cellulolyticum towards cellobiose were characterized using a gradient microfluidic device. The degradation of microcrystalline cellulose by C. cellulolyticum was observed in parallel microfluidic channels, suggesting that chemotaxis may play a key role in cellulose degradation by anaerobic digesters. These results demonstrate that microfluidics has great potential to study anaerobic microbial communities.
