Abstract

The budding yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, is a leading system in genomics due to the small genome size (12 Mb) and the availability of powerful genetic techniques. Genome sequencing of multiple hemiascomycete yeasts and multiple individuals from several species have allowed the application of a range of powerful comparative approaches. Comparative genomics have revealed evolutionary mechanisms that shape genomes and provided a formidable tool for assigning function to DNA sequence [1,2].
