Abstract

This chapter summarizes assessment and treatment of insomnia complaints in later life. Insomnia is a subjective complaint of persistent difficulty initiating and/or maintaining sleep, or non-restorative sleep, associated with marked distress and/or significant impairments of social or occupational functioning. It discusses general factors affecting older people’s sleep, and insomnia associated with age-related medical conditions.
