A previously developed method to analyze magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) is extended to analyze the near infrared region of ligand-field (LF) spin-forbidden transitions of the type 6A1→4E, 4A2, 4B2 of pseudo-tetrahedral high-spin Fe(III), S=5/2, in the protein oxidized rubredoxin. It is demonstrated that for some specific state of a paramagnetic center and under appropriate experimental conditions, the MCD of spin or symmetry forbidden transitions becomes comparable in magnitude to those of allowed transitions.
