Abstract

Atomic and molecular symmetry underpins all spectroscopies, its influence governing which spectral transitions, absorptions, emissions and features are "allowed" or "forbidden" and thence potentially observable. As a consequence, symmetry plays a fundamental role both in the theoretical background to spectroscopy and in the description and interpretation of spectra of all kinds. A brief overview of aspects of symmetry is given in a spectroscopic context.
