Abstract

This novel, which 'translates' Homer's The Odyssey into a narrative about the lives of two Indian men on a single day in London in July 1985, takes its structural cue from Joyce's Ulysses. It was published by Oneworld in the UK, Knopf in the US, and Penguin Random House in India. It was widely acclaimed, receiving an essay-length review from James Wood in the New Yorker: 'each page notices something freshly, or registers something true'. Neel Mukherjee claimed in the Guardian that it had 'placed itself, with erudition and playfulness, on the map of modernism'.
