In the 2015–2016 academic year, we were both postdoctoral fellows at the University of Calgary’s Department of English. Including Professor Bart Beaty, who served as our supervisor, this might have been the highest concentration of PhD-holding comics scholars in a single department world-wide, and the situation provided for a fertile and productive environment in which to conduct our postdoctoral research. When Bart’s administrative responsibilities made him unavailable to teach his customary “Comics and Graphic Novels” course in the winter term, we hatched the idea of teaching it together in his place, welcoming the opportunity to make it a truly collaborative effort that would both take advantage of and bridge our different scholarly and teaching backgrounds.
