Abstract

This afternoon we give you the rare opportunity to see a reconstruction of the performance practices of a fascinating era in media history: live radio drama from the ‘golden age’ of the 1940s. During that period, all broadcasting was fully live and, in America, the numerous stations competed with richly entertaining content designed to infuse instantaneously the domestic spaces of its millions and millions of listeners. Science Fiction and Horror were particularly popular genres: the art of audio worked supremely well in conjuring up fantastic futures and dreaded nightmares in the mind of the listener. Presenting a hybrid of American and British styles and practices, today we will take you on a journey into the studios of the past: a gloriously hectic environment of frantic Foley artists, versatile voice actors and a masterful musician as they present an old-style fantasy show! Our show will be webcast live via www.twitch.tv/uea_stream. It will be saved on the stream so please do listen again!
