This article examines the writing of Hugh Dalton, an artillery officer who served on the Italian front during the First World War, about the Italian rout at Caporetto in October 1917. Dalton described and analysed the rout in his book "With British Guns in Italy" (1919), but he also wrote about it in his unpublished diary. Comparing his published and unpublished accounts, I conclude that Dalton provided the first realistic explanation in English of the causes of Caporetto.
