Various solutions to the problem of combating bridge/link failures exist, most noticeably the spanning tree algorithm (STA) by R. Perlman (1985). Solutions based on a loop detect packet were proposed by R. Perlman and G. Varghese (1988) but never presented a viable alternative to work based on the STA. A more powerful loop detect packet based algorithm is described. The problems which plagued the previous loop detect approach are dealt with, and further extensions proposed. This algorithm is for multiple port local/remote bridges.
