Abstract

A theoretical implementation of organic photovoltaic panels in the south oriented awnings of a residential building in Greece, was attempted. Due to the significant solar radiation levels of the region, an assessment on the performance of such a system was made along with a comparison to a conventional Si-based system installed on the roof. We wanted to see whether current commercial OPV panels installed in alternative building surfaces could display such economic indicators that will make their utilization comparable with current technologies. Although we assumed a lifetime period of only 5 years, which is a logical one for current OPV products, and projecting the price for future commercial products we came down with lower cost per installed power, and comparable or even better simple payback periods to that of the Sibased system.
