Abstract

We present here the first stratospheric profile measurements of HCFC-141b (CH3-CFCl2) and HCFC-142b (CH3-CF2Cl). From the measurements we derive a stratospheric lifetime of 68±11 years for HCFC-141b and an estimated minimum stratospheric lifetime for HCFC-142b of 138 years relative to an N2O lifetime of 110 y. (These results increase to 104±17 y and >211 y respectively for an N2O lifetime of 168 y). Neither HCFC-141b nor HCFC-142b is now in equilibrium in the stratosphere, due to rapidly increasing emissions in recent years.
