Red soils of Africa fall into four major soil units of the FAO/UNESCO classification: Nitosols, Luvisols, Ferralsols and Acrisols. Red soils are widespread throughout the region. In southern Africa they are reasonably productive and a large proportion of agricultural production relies upon them. In East Africa they tend to be far less productive, yet are expected to support large numbers of the rural population.
