Attempts to place an examination of the political economy of this industry in the broader context of Argentinian development over the last 30 yr, focusing on 4 major growth periods: 1) prior to 1959 saw both the development of local assembly and spare part manufacture and initial attempts of manufacturing in the 1950's; 2) 1959-1965, included the installation of the major companies and the transition period in which local content was increased, plus the extension of foreign control; 3) 1966-70, the consolidation of an oligopotistic structure deminated by foreign capital; 4) 1970-79 various attempts to restructure the industry. Concludes by trying to explain the crisis of the industry, taking as a reference point the rapid growth of Brazilian production
