Abstract

The 2013 Special Issue of International Journal of Production Research discusses the research work on concurrent planning and scheduling. The aim of distributed scheduling is to enhance system reliability and utilization of resources through effective allocation of processes and collaboration between jobs in a supply chain. Lim and Tan in their paper introduce the use of a multi-agent system to achieve this operational efficiency through optimizing resource utilization within multi-site production facilities. Zhou and co-researchers study the benefit of original equipment manufacturers (OEM) from the decentralized control mode under which they ignore the internal cannibalization rather than the re-manufacturing option. Wang, Cheng, and Lin discuss the challenges of a decentralized manufacturing system such as how to achieve global optimization in decentralization systems, how to specify the dynamic behavior of autonomous agents, and how to embrace learning and self-adaptive capabilities, etc.
