This 371-page revisionist study is based upon seven years work, much of it archival. In particular it explores the wealth of information to be gleaned from the Powell archives in Birmingham, Cambridge, London and Stafford. It offers a first and detailed scholarly analysis of the politician's massive but previously unexploited collection of incoming correspondence. It represents a major contribution to its field based upon the widest possible reading of primary and secondary sources, both in the UK and the USA.
