Thomas Barker, pioneer of scientific weather observing, grandson of the mathematician and astronomer William Whiston, and brother-in-law of naturalist Gilbert White, was born at Lyndon Hall, Rutland, in 1722. At the age of eleven, Thomas began his record of the weather which he continued for over sixty years. Besides the invaluable meteorological content of his journals there are also fascinating observations on natural phenomena, agriculture, beekeeping and other countryside topics. He had a flair for recognising, through his long and meticulously kept daily records, changes of climate happening even during a lifetime. He was thus astutely anticipating the current interest in climatic change. -Publisher
