This article examines the interplay between private markets and public policy in foodgrain markets, utilizing the rice market in Indonesia as a case study. The methods and results of research into the working of the private rice market in Indonesia are described. Some wider lessons are drawn for research into staple food markets and the role of the state in price stabilization.
