This is a collection of philosophical essays on educational research with a particular focus on epistemological and ethical issues. It includes several which were previously published (within the RAE period) in international refereed journals and is characteristic of Bridges' work in bridging the educational research and philosophy of education communities. The approach is within the analytic tradition of philosophy but is by no means narrowly linguistic, and the writing is grounded in Bridges' experience in empirical work and in the management of educational research as well as in philosophy. The book has become one of the mainstays of ESRC-accredited research training programmes for doctoral students in the UK and the work has resulted in invitations to Visiting Professorships in Trondheim, Kaunas and Hong Kong and invitations to give keynote addresses in international conferences in many parts of the world.
