This retrospective survey was carried out to establish the current practice of respiratory physiotherapists with closed suction. Seventy-eight physiotherapists returned a postal questionnaire. These demonstrated a wide variation in practice, some of which is of concern. Practice and theory do not appear to mirror each other and issues are identified which require further research or education.
