Abstract
We study whether the strategically equivalent decomposition of coordination games with focal points into two components is behaviourally relevant. The decompositions allow us to manipulate the framing of the game and to emphasise collective or individual interests. We observe that the game decompositions are indeed behaviourally relevant. Under a stronger framing manipulation, we find that the frequency of salient choices decreases when a pure coordination game is framed as two simultaneous battle of the sexes components. Also, we observe that the frequency of salient choices is higher when the pure coordination component of a decomposed battle of the sexes game is presented first than when the game is presented without decomposition. Furthermore, we find that the size of the separated pure coordination payoff does not impact behaviour. Our results highlight the behavioural relevance of framing via game decompositions.
