This chapter explores the ideas that: • art and design is a significant and valuable subject at the heart of developing children’s creativity, curiosity, confidence and understanding of themselves and the world • art education involves complex relationships and connections: to others, to a dynamic knowledge base, to the past, to the present and to the future • educators must provide inclusive emotional, physical and curricula safe spaces to enable and challenge children’s authentic expression and artistic development.
