Abstract

This chapter explores the educational potential of popular protest songs, using examples of protest songs archived for the project Our Subversive Voice: The History and Politics of English Protest Music. The chapter examines protest song as an expression of citizenship and stimulus for secondary phase education in first language (L1) language arts. We ask what are possible educational uses of protest songs? Where might protest songs sit in the curriculum, and what pedagogies could exploit their modalities and affordances for learning? And how could study of protest song relate to national identity and citizenship education? The subject English has long been tied to national identity, with its changing methods and expressing altering conceptions and values of ‘being English’. In proposing integration of protest songs to L1 education, we argue for a distinctive form of citizenship education that fosters critical engagement with cultural and political identity.
