Abstract
First documented over a hundred years ago and proclaimed a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in the early 2000s, Vanuatu sand-drawing has never been the subject of a dedicated ethnographic analysis. My doctoral thesis, devoted to the study of one of the best-known local traditions of the archipelago - that of Ambrym Island - was a first step in this direction. In this article I offer an account of that work and its results, providing an overview of the history and distinctive features of this tradition.
