Abstract

This qualitative case study describes the development, delivery, and review of an undergraduate research experience focused on developing research skills. We share some effective methods for delivering this type of course having designed a lab-based module that is supported by theoretical workshops to introduce students to research and help bridge the gap from undergraduate laboratory training to research. We have designed an assessment framework that focusses on assessing the process, rather than the product. Evaluation of this module with qualitative research methods has highlighted its effectiveness, and some areas for improvement, providing a framework for deployment in other programs looking to arrange undergraduate research experiences.
