Abstract
As soon as Harold was dead, and William sat on the throne, observers who took an interest in the course of history began focusing in on the year 1066 as a turning point in the story of the English people and their fortunes. This tendency is no less apparent today. Books are written about ‘the end’ and ‘the downfall’ of what we call ‘Anglo-Saxon England’, and, as everyone knows, though it lingered to breathe its last a generation after the Conquest in such places as Worcester and Crowland – rather like Grendel creeping off to die in the Fens after Beowulf tore off his arm
