Abstract
The novel The Invisible Life of Eurídice Gusmão (2016), by Martha Batalha, adresses, among other questions, the imposed social limitations in gender relations, specially through the domestic dynamics between the narrative’s protagonist, Eurídice, and her husband, Antenor. By emphasizing the environments where the characters circulate, the book highlights the symbolism of the space in the narrative as a driving force of the possibilitiesand obstacles socially imposed to men and to women, whether in public spaces, such as business offices, or in private spaces, such as a kitchen. Within these public and private ambiences, it is also notable the gradation of smaller spaces, such as drawers, equally representative of other psychological features of the characters. Gaston Bachelard, in The Poetics of Space(1978), argues that the literary space presents different shades of personality and metaphor in literature. The permission or restriction of attending certain places onthe basis of gender corroborates the concerns, as indicated by Simone de Beauvoir, in The Second Sex(1980), that society allows men to navigate through different places, whereas women are restrained to predetermined and restrictedplaces, under a socialattribution of irrelevance and invisibility. Through a reading of the novel concerning the literary space gender relations, this work examines the correlation between the different environments used by different characters in Batalha’s novel and their symbolisms on gender.
