Abstract

Objective: The rising caseload of dementia is a global emergency. Adapting healthcare pathways to ensure equity of access to diagnostic tests such as MRI is of clinical importance. There is evidence that music can play a part in improving dementia care. The objective of this scoping review is to understand the extent and type of recommendations for the place of music as part of international dementia clinical practice guidelines (CPGs). Introduction: We have previously conducted a review that showed there is evidence for music assisting in dementia care practice in an in-patient setting. We are aware from experience that few dementia CPGs include music formally, but there has never been a thorough assessment of the inclusion of music or music therapy in dementia CPGs. Inclusion criteria: National level, published version in English available, Dementia clinical practice guidelines, from Jan 1st 2015 – June 1st 2025. Methods: We will conduct a structured review of databases to identify the most recent national clinical strategies or care practice guidelines for people with dementia published between 2015 and 2025. We will examine each guideline for any reference to music or music therapy.
