Abstract

Since the introduction of Outreach and Widening Participation following the Dearing and Kennedy reports in 1997, mature student numbers have dwindled in the UK. In response, the Office for Students has encouraged universities to provide targeted Information, Advice, and Guidance to support social mobility and economic growth for this vital demographic. This chapter explores how the University of East Anglia adopts a longitudinal approach to support mature students throughout their academic lifecycle; from pre-entry engagement at the community and further education college level, through transition into higher education, and onward to continuation. Drawing on literature and the theory of Possible Selves, the chapter outlines interventions that address the motivations, challenges, and enablers experienced by mature students both collectively and individually. The approaches described have demonstrated positive impacts, with increasing engagement and feedback highlighting the importance of representation and tailored support.
