In this concluding chapter we find ourselves reflecting on the world that shaped the creation of this book and the one we now inhabit. What began as a project during the upheaval of COVID-19 has unfolded against the backdrop of an ongoing, ever-evolving polycrisis. In moments like these, citizenship—what it means, who it includes, and how it is taught—feels more urgent than ever. This chapter explores how crises have reshaped our understanding of citizenship, not as a rigid status but as a practice—something we cultivate together. Reflecting on the chapters in this collection we consider how optimism need not be naïve but instead grounded in action: tending to the world around us, even when perfection is impossible. We honour the late Geoff Hinchliffe, whose final chapter in this volume embodies his lifelong belief in education as a force for the common good. His work reminds us that, even in uncertain times, there is space for hope. We conclude by noting that citizenship education, at its best, should prepare us not just to understand the world’s flaws but to actively shape a better one. Perhaps, as Candide suggests, our task is simply this: to make our garden grow.
