Abstract

This chapter examines the form of parish church naves in the 12th and 13th centuries in Cambridgeshire based on a survey of surviving evidence. Particular attention is paid to the existence and addition of aisles and transepts and location of towers. The context for aisles within Cambridgeshire churches is considered through examinations of earlier aisles churches such as Ickleton. The influences in their development are identified as local great-church motifs, though with a preference towards subsidiary buildings rather than the main church itself and for a single salient element rather than wholesale imitation.
