Abstract

Using feminist body politics, I explore women’s agency in shaping their own authentic sport performances. By focusing on the uniforms women are demanded to wear, the sports they are permitted to compete in, to the competition rules that frame their experience, I want to shine a light on the same old stories of protectionism and delegitimizing of women in the sporting world. Alongside the media coverage and governing bodies actions that deliberately construct legitimate and acceptable female sporting bodies, I want to highlight the ongoing fight needed to change how sport is run and engaged in by all stakeholders. But I also want to shout about the successes that are here when women demanded change and took it, enabling the possibilities of future becoming’s and a fulfilled embodiment of female athletic performance. I end by highlighting the ongoing possibilities of the transformative power of sport to enact change in the shaping of a new Olympic movement.
