Abstract

Using feminist body politics, I explore women's agency in shaping their own authentic sport performances. By focusing on the uniforms women are demanded to wear, the sports they are permitted to compete in, and the competition rules that frame their experience, I aim to shine a light on the same old stories of protectionism and the delegitimizing of women in the sporting world. Alongside the media coverage and governing bodies’ actions that deliberately construct legitimate and acceptable female sporting bodies, I want to highlight the ongoing fight needed to change how sport is run and engaged in by all stakeholders. But I also want to emphasize the successes achieved when women demanded change and took it, enabling the possibilities of future becomings and a fulfilled embodiment of female athletic performance. I end by highlighting the ongoing possibilities of the transformative power of sport to enact change in the shaping of a new Olympic movement.
