Abstract

When Malcolm Bradbury established with Angus Wilson the University of East Anglia’s MA in Creative Writing in 1970, he did so in an attempt to make the provincial British university an institutional base for new writing. This paper asks how far a campus university in a rural or regional environment (like the University of East Anglia) might be understood as a nonmetropolitan centre for the study and creation of contemporary modernism – or is it yet another retreat for urban artists and elites?
