No longer neglected, Elizabeth Bowen has emerged as a significant twentieth century British writer. Here I consider how her work in the 1940s can be situated both in relation to the period, and to her literary and critical inheritances. The chapter considers a range of novels, short stories and essays to broaden awareness of her work from her best-recognised war writing to some lesser known, but no less significant, materials.
