Abstract

This article explores the reception of European protestant reformation in the British Atlantic using the early Bermuda church as a case study. It offers an alternative model for puritan colonization which was driven by a reformed vision for godly globalization and evangelization rather than flight from persecution in England. By shedding light on such ecclesiastical ties between the reformed churches on the continent and the British Atlantic, it extends the ideological foundations for the establishment of British America beyond those usually addressed by historians such as theories of empire and economic opportunism.
