Abstract

Two pilot Intelligent Energy Buildings (IEB) were studied as a reengineering product of Zero Energy Buildings (ZEB). RES technologies, solar radiation simulation models, ICT tools, new material and nano-coatings were embedded into their structure to make them function harmonically with the environment. The design principles, the energy modeling and operational details of such an IEB are outlined in this paper. These pilot units equipped with a dynamic hourly solar radiation prediction model, are supported by sensors and signal processing in order to manage effectively the energy balance equation: Energy provider-Loads=Storage/back up system. The energy provider is split in two parts. The first one is the thermal energy system which consists of various modes of south façade embedded in the wall and a roof designed to operate as solar collector. Also, a solar chimney to provide natural ventilation. The second one is a PV generator which is part of the roof, like an embedded BIPV, and a wind turbine in a hybrid mode with the PV.
