Abstract

The author shows that the distribution of water within the root zone, at least for tea in Malawi, plays an important part in determining response to irrigation. This means that two or more soil moisture state variables will be necessary in the dynamic programming (DP) method of finding the optimal application policy, and this makes DP even more difficult to use in practice than has been previously indicated.
