Abstract

Texture analysis and synthesis is an important field in computer vision. Since the late sixties, numerous techniques have been developed for the synthesis and analysis of texture in 2D images. 2D texture mapping is used to emulate 3D texture synthesis. However, such an approach has two major drawbacks, texture discontinuity and texture distortion in complex object. A solution to these problems is given by solid texture modelling which is reviewed. As realism in image synthesis can not be obtained without addition of noise an overview of solid noise synthesis is also given. Most of the techniques used for the analysis of texture in 3D medical images, such as CT and MITT, are based on 2D models applied to each slice (the volume is decomposed in 2D images) followed by the reconstruction of the volume and this approach does not use the full information of the data. This review covers techniques based on a true 3D texture analysis.
