Abstract

Nursing involves constant exposure to emotionally demanding situations, requiring management of both interpersonal and clinical challenges. Emotional intelligence (EI) offers a framework for understanding how nurses perceive, regulate, and respond to these demands. This paper examines EI’s role in fostering resilience at individual, team, and organisational levels, highlighting its contribution to emotional regulation, adaptive coping, communication, and psychological safety. However, overemphasis on EI risks individualising responsibility and overlooking systemic stressors, such as workload and staffing pressures. While valuable, EI alone is insufficient; it must be supported by organisational structures and culture to sustain staff wellbeing and enable compassionate, effective care.
