Abstract

Good clinical decisions can improve effective provision of healthcare for patients, especially when supporting patient autonomy. However, clinical decision-making errors have significant negative impacts on patients, leading to delayed care, patient harm and staff distress. Clinical decisions are specific, evidence-based choices about the provision of care, made by healthcare professionals, often in partnership with patients, the outcome of which may be immediate, or long term. Nursing managers have key roles in leading and supporting their staff to make clinical decisions, and this “How to” article reinforces skills necessary to do so.
