Abstract

Drawing on ethnographic research on the exhibition practices of three Shenzhen film clubs between June 2017 and September 2018, this chapter examines what ‘alternative' film culture means in China after the 2017 Film Law. As state and market forces play more decisive roles in the post-independent scene, film club organizers must adopt new tactics and strategies to cope with escalating pressures. This chapter details how independent screening practices renegotiate their relationships with these forces to help form a new alternative film culture that shapes the audience's aesthetic appreciation and critical judgment. It argues that this new film culture demonstrates the shifting and realigning of power dynamics within the post-independent scene, appearing as an interplay of independent and commercial cinema and negotiating the complex relations between politics, art, and commerce.
