Abstract
I read the referral letter about Michelle, who has an appointment to see me, the clinical nurse specialist (CNS) in stoma care, in the preoperative stoma care clinic today. It had been a busy morning, and I still feel residual stress from a difficult encounter earlier. I try to calm myself with several deep breaths to focus on Michelle. Michelle is 45 years of age and scheduled to undergo a low anterior resection for a low rectal cancer. This means that she will need her rectum and part of her sigmoid colon removed. The colorectal surgeon will then anastomose (join) the bowel to the small amount of remaining distal rectum. The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan shows the cancer to be stage 3. This means that the cancer is locally advanced, having spread to the nearby lymph nodes, so Michelle will need chemotherapy as well as surgery. VALUE: professionalism VALUE: self-awareness.
